The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

When an teenage makes Real Madrid history in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight place.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's extremely dynamic, with great endurance, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to represent both nations at the highest level.

According to international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue future success.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
