Ultra-Conservative Former Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile Next Leader.

Following a conclusive second-round vote, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Win

With over 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third presidency, having previously been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Platform Focused On Security and Immigration

Noted for his strong Catholic views and regard for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely focused on promises to tackle increasing violence and significantly curb migration.

He frequently cited foreigners, particularly the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the election cycle, he gave an ultimatum for them to leave before the new term begins or face deportation.

His plans included controversial measures such as building detention centers, high walls, perimeter fencing, and strengthening the military presence on the northernmost frontier.

Within a Regional Trend

Many commentators view Kast's victory as fitting into a larger conservative trend in South America, coming after this year's electoral results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Nevertheless, other pundits also view it as a continuation of the established swing of power between left and right administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Governing Lacking a Clear Majority

Despite his clear popular vote win, Kast does not have an clear majority in the legislature, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are grouped together.

This political situation might challenge his agenda, such as a pledge to cut public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a plan for which he has yet to detailed a clear explanation.

"There are many questions about how a Kast government will look like that are uncertain because he has not explained his methods for do them," said a political expert.
