Although not quite at the same level as pardoning holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: vibrant, varied, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Every time, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
