The original creators behind the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated that corporate owner Unilever prevented the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside his partner, announced that he will independently develop this new flavor as part of an individual collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.
This latest announcement deepens the continuing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain that Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
Mr. Cohen revealed via social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Mr. Cohen stated how he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years with the organization, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy was undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise the social mission, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
