The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
