The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in 25 Years.

Following 25 long years, no portion of California is facing water scarcity. This landmark event comes on the heels of challenging years marked by below-average rain that intensified fire dangers and pressured its massive agricultural sector.

A Chart Indicates Zero Dryness

Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program illustrated that all of California is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This shift was driven by weeks of heavy precipitation that topped up water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their typical levels.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a local meteorologist.

Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations

The path to this point included intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and fatalities. Although that weather helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Until late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were considered experiencing dryness. Substantial precipitation at the beginning of January washed away those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

Yet, authorities caution that drought-free conditions does not mean being out of the woods. Latest data of the high-elevation snow show it at approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which provides about a third of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for future water availability. State experts point out that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a California water official. “The goal is the snow accumulation to improve by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”

Although the monitor indicates no dryness, attention turns to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the coming seasons.
