Sports Champions Appeal on Iranian Authorities to Prevent Execution of Boxing Champion

Over twenty Olympic medal winners, mentors and other world-class competitors have endorsed a statement demanding a stop to the execution of a champion boxer and coach, who is facing execution in the country.

Increasing Global Anger

Amidst rising international outrage over the country's increasing application of the death penalty as a tool of repression, the powerfully expressed letter censures the Iranian regime's ruling to uphold the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The boxer, 30, from the city in north-east Iran, was taken into custody for being involved in countrywide demonstrations in two thousand nineteen and charged of aiding an opposition group. He has spent 60 months in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and kept in isolation.

“Sport is designed to promote faith, togetherness, and courage,” the endorsers wrote. “The capital punishment of a winner for his opinions is a clear violation on these ideals and a caution to any competitor who dares to speak out.

Record of Killing Competitors

The letter pointed out that the boxer's situation was not an isolated one and emphasized the nation's past of sentencing to death athletes for their views, such as a national team leader, leader of the football side, and Fourouzan Abdi, skipper of the women's volleyball squad. In the year 2020, a wrestling champion, a young Iranian wrestling champion, was put to death.

Other supporters to the appeal include a yachting pioneer, who led the pioneering all-female crew in a round-the-world competition and was the first woman to receive a esteemed yachting trophy; the previous captain of the national squad an athlete; and a sports figure, who was in the national team for the international competition.

Detention and Flawed Legal Process

The boxer was detained in early 2020. The accusations against him included “spreading corruption on Earth through arson and destruction of public property”. His sentence has been annulled multiple times but on 4 October it was maintained on the latest review. His legal proceedings was denounced as “deeply biased” by human rights activists and organizations.

Call to UN

The appeal to stop Vafaei Sani’s capital punishment is subsequent to a previous letter to the United Nations official for freedoms, endorsed by more than 100 rights specialists and organizations, demanding measures to avert the sports figure's execution.

Execution Crisis

As per reports, there is an “death penalty surge in the nation, which has attained alarming proportions”. In two thousand twenty-three, officials executed at least 853 people – a forty-eight percent increase on 2022. The year before, data showed 972 capital punishments, marking the peak figure since two thousand fifteen. In excess of 800 people have been put to death so far in 2025.
