New Year's Revelers Advised to Wrap Up Warm with Wintry Weather Expected Throughout the UK

Forecasters have indicated an icy start to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Proceed Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to take place, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be necessary," stated the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be cold, meaning warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

Readings Set to Drop Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Warnings Activated

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this meant the weather was likely to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
