Madeleine McCann brother and sister, Amelie and Sean, have told the court that their interactions with an accused stalker were extremely upsetting and creepy. The siblings explained feeling stressed and scared by a woman who claimed she was their long-lost sister.
Appearing remotely, she described how the accused, the 24-year-old, reached out to her repeatedly through online platforms and letters. Amelie explained the relentlessness was quite frightening since you don’t know what her next move might be.
Communications from Wandelt were read in the trial, in which she described memories of being in the family home that she said were recalled during hypnotherapy. Amelie told the court, It's very upsetting that she’s coming up with these supposed recollections, despite the fact she’s not Maddie.
Jurors learned that Wandelt had created images of herself and Amelie as children, which the prosecution alleged were made with ChatGPT. Some of these images were sent through social media, while others were produced physically and included in a mail to Amelie.
Amelie said, It was unpleasant, it made me feel very uncomfortable. She had clearly altered the pictures to make me look more like her, which was quite distressing. I was aware I didn’t look like that, I knew it had been manipulated.
She also discussed the impact of the alleged stalking on her mother, their mother, who gave evidence about being approached at home by the defendant and her alleged accomplice, a 61-year-old woman.
I think my mother found it the most difficult. My mother was targeted by Julia to a greater extent than the others in the family and I believe it definitely took its toll on her and her mental health, she testified. It's distressing when someone’s begging you to believe them and manipulating your feelings, to the point you are doubting your own judgment.
In a testimony read to the court, her brother stated that personally, he had not been too badly impacted by the defendant's alleged stalking. But he had been upset that she was drawing social media scrutiny, with people posting hurtful and unjust comments about his parents.
If Wandelt was not suffering from a psychological condition and was fully aware she is not Maddie, yet makes these claims, that will be very upsetting for me, he said. I am convinced she is my sister. The reality that Julia is engaging in this behavior has caused me a great deal of anxiety and I find it deeply troubling.
The defendant and her co-defendant have pleaded not guilty to stalking the family household. Proceedings continue.
