Liverpool's Captain Concedes Squad is in a Mess, Challenges Teammates on Accountability

Virgil van Dijk has issued a blunt assessment of Liverpool's disappointing championship campaign, confessing the reigning champions are in a mess and failing manager Arne Slot while questioning whether every player is owning up for the team’s slump.

The Dutch defender struggled to hold back his anger after Saturday’s heavy loss at Anfield by Forest, a result that saw the Reds in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a negative goal difference. The club's chair was in attendance to witness Liverpool’s sixth defeat in seven league games, their eighth loss in 11 matches across all competitions, and a performance that fell apart against a Forest side that began the match in the drop zone.

“Unacceptable” Start and Defensive Lapses

The captain labeled Liverpool’s start to the second half as “unacceptable” and admitted “panic kicked in” as soon as the Forest player gave Sean Dyche’s team the lead. The first goal was the ninth concession Liverpool have allowed from dead-ball situations in the current campaign.

“There was a great build-up to the match but in a fixture you are facing reality and the facts are we conceded a free-kick in the opening period and a poor concession at the start of the second half,” said the defender. “As a team, we're definitely failing the manager, but we’ve let ourselves down as well. Start with self-reflection and then you support teammates, you work together to escape of this crisis because at the moment it is a difficult situation – that's the reality.

Captain’s Challenge: Step Up

The skipper typically addresses the media after a match as part of his role as team leader. Saturday was different, however. His voice was more forceful – so loud that any player in the stadium corridors could hear him – and he expressed visible fury while challenging the squad to respond. “Anger is justified,” he insisted. “The key point for me is that everyone has to take responsibility.” When questioned whether this is occurring, he replied: “It's unclear. But you have to do that. That's crucial I expect the players to do. It’s not easy during tough periods but we must act if we aim to recover of this.”

Summer Signings and Team Problems

The Merseyside club spent almost £450 million to replenish a title-winning squad in the off-season but have gone backwards, with new arrivals struggling to contribute so far. Van Dijk insisted that Liverpool’s issues go beyond the recent additions. “It’s tough for everyone,” he said. “My expectation is for each player to take responsibility on the field. This is necessary in order to push each other, to improve collectively. If a teammate presses, you must join the press. These are fundamentals but they're lacking enough.”

Appeal to Stick Together

Van Dijk continued: “In the current term we don’t have any steady form, we allow excessive scores, we are losing battles and everyone is responsible for it and I trust everyone sees that. It's vital to accept duty to reverse the situation and tempting to assign blame but you have to do it together. Past successes were collective and won the league and all contributed, and when you go through a challenging phase you have to stick together and avoid blaming others.

“You have to be a man and confront the hardship and persist, repeatedly because if you want to give up then you are at the wrong place in my view, because Liverpool has been enduring many adversity over recent seasons and we’ve consistently emerged of it. However, that doesn't imply it is easy, it’s tiring but there is only one path forward.”

The upcoming match in the Premier League is a trip to West Ham next weekend, after the Champions League fixture of the Dutch side in the Champions League. Van Dijk said: “The next game is another opportunity so what am I going to do, dwell on the loss? No, I'll return and analyze how we can turn this around and hopefully that is the collective focus as well.”
