Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities released video stills Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
