Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
