English top-flight clubs are confronting the possibility of higher wage bills after the official declaration in the budget that image rights payments will be treated as income from the year 2027.
This adjustment will result in many top-flight players with significantly larger taxation expenses, and several agents have said that this is likely to be passed on to teams, particularly for athletes who sign new contracts before the policy is implemented.
Many players obtain image rights paid to corporate entities for commercial earnings, such as sponsorship deals and promotional earnings. Starting in 2027, these will be subject to the 45% top rate of income tax, instead of the company tax level of 25 percent.
Some Premier League players signed from overseas are understood to have stipulations in their agreements that hold their teams responsible for any significant changes to the UK’s tax regime, but those who do not are likely to demand higher wages.
Many players arrange deals based on net pay, with teams taking care of their tax obligations, a trend expected to persist. Branding income often make up a notable portion of footballers' earnings, which is allowed under HMRC if the amount is considered commercially realistic and remains below 20 percent of overall income, so the higher tax burden for clubs may be considerable.
“With these changes, the authorities is ensuring compensation aligns with fair taxation, and giving a more transparent view of the salary expenditures driving economic viability discussions in the UK football scene. There will be some immediate challenges as teams adapt, but in the long run this promotes greater integrity, accountability and trust in the economics of the game.”
This official step follows a long-running clampdown by HMRC on footballers’ earnings, which has recovered hundreds of millions of pounds in outstanding taxation.
