In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this charming family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
